Tournament hosts athletes from around the world who are blind or visually impaired
SURREY, BC – Vancouver Goalball Club and the City of Surrey invite members of the media to the 2019
Vancouver Goalball Grand Slam presented by YVR, and Try-it series at Guildford Recreation Centre.
Goalball is a Paralympic team sport designed for athletes who are blind or visually impaired. Using their hands
only, the goal is for players to throw the ball into the opposing team’s net across a volleyball-sized court.
Players track the ball, which has bells inside it, by listening for the sound. This year’s Goalball Grand Slam
will host mens and womens athletes from the USA, Canada and Israel who
are preparing for the Paralympic qualifiers.
In addition to the tournament, a Goalball Try-It series is being offered for those who would like to try this
challenging sport. Players will be given eyeshades and are encouraged to wear a long-sleeved shirt and pants.
While the event takes place all weekend, we have identified the most opportune times for media below.
